Practical Applications of Augmented Reality in Surgery
Background and Purpose: Augmented Reality (AR) is gaining acceptance within the industry as a valid training tool and technical aid in task performance. AR visors are transparent screens that do not block the surrounding scene and allow projection of relevant information into the operator's field of vision. Their form factor is compatible with current surgical setups in that they resemble "splash shields" and allow hands-free operation. AR data can be overwhelming and distracting. Furthermore, continuous AR can have a dizzying and nauseating effect. Thus the careful selection of data to display and judicious triggers for selected displays are critical to minimize distractions, reduce side-effects, and optimize computational needs. We present our

Development of Online Instructional Materials for Chemotherapy and Mechanisms of Action for Hematology Oncology Fellows
HemOnc fellows have intense workloads and many find it challenging to learn/retain comprehensive information regarding the mechanisms of action for chemotherapy. The department of Hematology-Oncology has high expectations and seek to teach trainees better ways in which to write chemotherapy orders and provide better patient management. We have constructed digital materials to teach trainees and refresh knowledge. Teaching the domain of chemotherapy poses great challenges as evidenced by an average national board scores of 58% on this topic. Our goal was to improve these scores/understanding using online instruction. A 5 member instructional design team expectations and audience students was statistically evaluated on 7 characteristics.

WebApps - OU-Tulsa's Platform for Rapid Application Development
Used in a production environment for nearly seventeen years, WebApps is a unique, internally built, ASP.net web application housing multiple healthcare-related and administrative systems. By using system metadata, WebApps allows rapid development and deployment of role-based systems for virtually any purpose. To achieve this flexibility, WebApps leverages object-oriented design techniques to require only two pages - one for editing and another for listing and searching an unlimited number of tables across multiple systems.

Monthly automated provider panel reports
We have developed and implemented a Provider Panel Report for OU Physicians-Tulsa Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC+) providers. This patient-level report includes a provider’s assigned patients with critical health information, i.e. diagnosis flags, demographics, screening status, and visit data. Monthly, an automated process initiates in Pentaho’s ETL tool that extracts the list of providers and passes a unique identifier to Pentaho’s reporting tool to extract the list of patients assigned to each provider and their associated health information. The Report is passed back to the ETL tool and emailed to each provider in an attached excel sheet. The sortable Report is then used for population health activities and patient management.

Data Mining with a Pickaxe, creative uses of Qualtrics to streamline processes in an administrative office
Qualtrics is known as a survey product, widely used for research, customer service, human resources, project management, & education. It is a misconception to think its primary function is surveys and polls as you can use the program to collect a variety of information. Qualtrics is a smart tool that can lead people to provide you with data in a streamlined fashion. It can help you avoid the pitfalls of receiving scraps of information and ensure you receive what you need in the appropriate format. This workshop will walk participants through identifying, and mapping potential uses for Qualtrics software in routine activities. The goal is to provide new and current users with ideas for integrating Qualtrics into their everyday tasks.

The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate the exciting capacities of today's IOS/Android based applications to turn a traditionally lecture-based course into a hands-on journey through a course's concepts. The focus will be on how to pull together various suites of applications that allow the instructor to expose students to experiential activities. The intended outcome of this presentation will be to inspire other instructors to build their own application tool boxes to be shared with students in their courses to bring concepts from the presentation slide/textbook to the floor with minimum cost to the instructor/department. To realize this objective an example from a recently completed biomechanics course will be used.

Using the Top Hat Teaching Platform Inside and Outside the Classroom
Top Hat classroom response system allows students to provide their own devices (phone, tablet, laptop) rather than purchase software-specific devices. Instructors boost engagement and give instant feedback in-class by presenting of a wide variety of question types⎯from standard multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions to visually-appealing word clouds and heat maps⎯that students respond to anonymously. Top Hat also can be used outside the classroom to create and manage readings, videos, discussions, and assignments. This presentation covers Top Hat as a classroom response system, Top Hat Textbook for assigned readings, and Top Hat Test for quizzes and exams. It also details tips to use the software most effectively and efficiently.

Designing a Multi-Purpose Streaming Studio
Over the last few years we have strengthened the Broadcast Meteorology program, which is a partnership between the School of Meteorology and the Gaylord College of Journalism.

As part of this we opened a broadcast studio on the 1st floor of the National Weather Center in the area used by the Oklahoma Weather Lab. The room first was set up with similar equipment to that of a TV studio, but quickly realized that it was too complex for only 1 or 2 people to set up. We sought new technologies to simplify the set up.

Over the past two years, we accomplished this. With the help of Open Source Software and a different camera, we reduced set up time by a factor of 10. Consequently, students can record or stream to various Internet locations.

Practical Applications of Augmented Reality in Surgery
Background and Purpose: Augmented Reality (AR) is gaining acceptance within industry as a valid training tool and technical aid in task performance. AR visors are transparents screens that do not block the surrounding scene, and allow projection of relevant information into the operator's field of vision. Their form factor is compatible with current surgical setups in that they resemble "splash shields" and allow hands-free operation. AR data can be overwhelming and distracting. Furthermore, continuous AR can have a dizzying and nauseating effect. Thus careful selection of data to display and judicious triggers for selected displays are critical to minimize distractions, reduce side-effects, and optimize computational needs. We present our

"From Lecturing to Leaping: How The Integration of IOS/Android-Based Applications Turbocharged My Biomechanics Classroom"

Call to Adventure: Students On A Hero's Journey
Students are on a journey as they grow and learn. If we think of this expedition in the context of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, how might this alter our teaching strategies? What can we learn from the Monomyth in how we engage students? Can we identify the Ally, the Guardian, or the Shadow in our courses? How do we support our students as they face trials and emerge with greater understanding of the world? These are some of the questions we wish to examine.

During this session, we will explore the Hero’s Journey using a digital framework, to discuss the role of storytelling in our work and to push our thinking further when considering how we engage students. Come prepared for active discussion, fun, and an atypical educational forum!
